TRUE BLUE, Grenada, January 12, 2021 — St. George’s University (SGU) announced that Dr. Marios Loukas has been appointed to the role of Dean, School of Medicine for St. George’s University. Dr. Loukas is only the fifth Dean of the School of Medicine in the university’s forty-four-year history and will continue to be based in Grenada. Dr. Loukas will report to Dr. Richard Liebowitz, Vice Chancellor, and succeeds Dr. Stephen Weitzman, who has been with SGU for over forty years and will remain with SGU as Dean Emeritus.

The Dean of the School of Medicine is one of the most critical roles at the university. To fill this key position, a professional search firm was hired to identify candidates, both internally and externally. Dr. Loukas, who has served in the important role of Dean of Basic Sciences for the past five years, was felt to be the most qualified individual to assume this key position. The senior leadership of SGU, including its academic leaders and Board of Directors, strongly supports the selection of Dr. Loukas and looks forward to his leadership.

Dean of School of Medicine – Marios Loukas, MD, PhD
Dr. Loukas received his medical degree from Warsaw University School of Medicine and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Institute of Rheumatology at the Department of Pathology in Warsaw, Poland. He held a postdoctoral position at Ulm University Clinic in Germany and studied arteriogenesis. Dr. Loukas continued his academic career at Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA where he served as lecturer and laboratory instructor in anatomy. In 2005, he joined St. George’s University and became Professor and Chair of the Department of Anatomical Sciences. Under his leadership, the Department of Anatomical Sciences developed several novel approaches to medical education, including a unique Division of Ultrasound in Medical Education. In 2012, Dr. Loukas was appointed Dean of Research for the School of Medicine.

Dr. Loukas has published over 800 scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, authored twenty books and over twenty chapters in various medical and surgical textbooks. He has also served as editor and co-editor for several journals and is currently co-editor of the journal Clinical Anatomy and the founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal Translational Research in Anatomy. In February 2015, Dr. Loukas was appointed Dean of Basic Sciences at St. George’s University School of Medicine. Dr. Loukas has been able to share his medical knowledge in the anatomical sciences with a larger audience and in 2017 was named the President of the American Association of Clinical Anatomists.
