this. Carnival is a festival and a platform for
business where the most creative and innovative will
emerge the most successful when it’s all over.
Unfortunately and fortunately with the rise of social
media and musical platforms like YouTube and facebook
,audiences “Carnivalers” can choose directly with quick
turnover on what they would like to hear to make their
carnival experience better. The fact remains that Soca
music is always given priority and rightly so over the
festive time, but fans just like everyone else likes
variety and the DJs know that hence the reason for the
musical multiplicity around the season. This is what
the people who spend their money are asking for!

Carnival and Soca/ calypso have been evolving rapidly
over the decades and have always been aligned with
YOUTH and a need to make profits. Artist like Sparrow
who is today celebrated, was widely criticised for
switching up the music up to reflect what’s hot at the
moment. Super Blue, Bunji Garlin, Iwer and Machel
follow suit hence their success. From the Traditional
Calypso to whine (explicit Sparrow styled) to Rags and
Flags (Super Bule) to Ragga Soca (Bunji Garlin) to
Grovy Soca and dancehall Soca and Now POP Soca. Soca
has never been stagnant. Thanks God

Today the Soca artists and DJs are much more
commercially aware than ever and therefore are catering
based on demands! And who can blame them? After all
they need to eat!! There are not just artist and Djs,
man, they are business men! Carnival would continue to
be a festival of music once it is relevant to the
carnival audience. The Bar and clubs know exactly what
to play (Demands) and the Soca artist have to tailor
their music to suit, no pun intended. As it relate to
the street, no need to worry as you would not hear
BEYONCE playing on the road carnival day anytime soon!!
And and the radio is all about Soca so no need to fret
guys. Soca always reigns!! Soca will alway be
relevant!! Long live New SOCA
